The media has only the power to spread and disseminate news or an issue. They have the power to what, where, when, and how a news or issue would be televised or broadcasted. They also had the power to cover news repeatedly as they wanted. They have the right to make entertainment news as a hard news. In the Kris-Joey Love Tragedy and The Untimely Death of Rico Yan, the media shows how powerful they are. They showed the public how they are glutton to news.
Let’s talk first the Death of Rico Yan. Rico Yan. Young actor. Singer. Talent
of ABS-CBN. And popular of his hemorrhagic pancreatitis or “bangungot.” His
death is very remarkable in the media industry, especially in the two biggest
TV Station in the Philippines – ABS-CBN and GMA. Who would have forgotten the
nonstop update of Yan’s death, burial and funeral? It is aired 24/7 in
television, radio stations and even in the newspapers. How can we forget that
death, when the ABS-CBN and GMA are surpassing one another in covering Yan’s
death? The media glut fanaticism to Rico Yan. They made him saint-like to be devoted
people every time. There are many errors in reporting in both TV Station –
ABS-CBN and GMA. Let’s talk about first in the Karen Davila and Mike Cohen,
they were pointlessly asking and annoying the father and brother of Rico Yan.
They were asking irritating questions and redundantly asking if how was the
feeling after hearing the news. It is very unethical to ask that question because
in the first place, the family is mourning. They kept asking and updating Yan’s
death, they’re on the wrong track. Well, since the actor was from ABS-CBN, the
family has no choice but to play along, at the cost of their private mourning.
The way Davila and Cohen coverage is very uneducated because they were
squeezing out every time response from an obviously distressed father and brother.
And their wrong in reporting, is that the ABS-CBN neglected that that time is
Good Friday, mourning to God. Instead of giving time to God, they reported the
whole day and for the subsequent days.
Curiosity
is a journalistic skill. The GMA cover too the death of Yan. GMA is the first
station to report the death of Yan, because Arnold Clavio was in the resort
where Yan was died. The two big stations start beating each other.
The point
here is the media coverage is very exaggerated, to the point that the
entertainment news placed in the headline on hard news. The death of Rico Yan
replaces all the issue regarding to politics, economy and other current
affairs. There is much news that was replaced, examples are the Israel slammed into
Palestinian territory and put the peace in the Middle East and the world in
danger. And then when the ageing and being frail of the former Pope, struggle
to strengthen the church that remains an encouragement of hope and steadiness.
And because of Yan’s untimely death, the issue about the coming election was
replaced too in the news headlines.
In Chay Florentino HofileƱas “Held
Hostage by TV,” in
the Kris-Joey Scandal, entertainment dictated the news, is simply says how the
press (Newspaper and Television) made a simple breakup to be a big issue that
eradicated all hard news. The issue about Kris-Joey, supposedly put at the
entertainment news, but the erroneous of this, the media put it at the
headlines of TV and Newspapers. They put it at the headlines where hard news should
be placed. But the people lose their appetite after having reported it in three
consecutive days. Who wouldn’t? And the wrong in the Newspapers industry is
that they accept the issue about Kris-Joey, and replaced all the hard news that
was supposedly put in the headline banners of newspapers. The heartbreak of two
couple-before was been a good issue because they replace the current issues
that are regarding to politics, economy and other MORE important. Example of
this was the “President Arroyo will run for the next year election,” and was
side swept by “Kris: Joey hit, poked gun to me.” They labeled this as an
“EXCLUSIVE,” even though it’s not! The newspapers were hostage to TV Patrol’s
take on the story.
To sum it up, the media becomes excessive in
reporting news, especially in the entertainment industry, to the point that
they replace the more important than those celebrities. Yes, those celebrities
are eminent, but the media almost forgot what the needs of pubic are. And they
failed to remember that hard news is more important than those celebrities.
Now, after that two issues, still, some Journalist still reporting that way. In
the death of former President Cory Aquino, the ABS-CBN covers the burial to
funeral. It’s such a shame in the part of the TV Station because in the first
place, every night in TV Patrol, the Headline is always Cory’s death. The
station made that, at least for two to three days, but how come they delay some
TV shows. Yes, Cory is eminent, but the TV Patrol almost covers the whole scene
in the burial.
The next
is, when Dolpy Quizon was died. The ABS-CBN covers it, covers the almost entire
happenings in the burial. The reporters in ABS-CBN were squeezing some family
members of Dolphy. They asked the son of Dolphy of some erroneous questions.
The UKG (Umagang Kay Ganda) interviewed the elder son of Dolphy, asking if
“After receiving the report that your father was gone how was your feeling?”
How can you move on when the interviewee asks you like those questions? The
whole nation mourns in that death of Dolphy, who wouldn’t? Both TV Stations
were surpassing each other AGAIN!
How about
the death of late DILG Secretary Robredo who was passed away month ago? The
whole nation informs about it because of media. Secretary Robredo was not that
popular as you would notice, but because of the nonstop interviewing of the
press, Robredo became a saint-like to be devoted because of the good things
that he has done before. The TV Patrol is active in interviewing the family of
Robredo, like the wife and the daughters of Robredo. The media becomes glutton
when it comes to none worth news. Yes, Robredo is a public servant, but the
media made it a big deal that “Robredo was died.” Yes, he died, but why the
media redundantly reporting about it. Repeatedly.
To end
this critical analysis, the media is becoming epicure in the entertainment
news, and they make it hard news. This is really foolishness. What about the
people who are not interested on the story of the celebrity/ceased? A person
needs news that is worthy, and when they open a newspaper they must see in the
front page the news (hard news) that needs most. And when they open television,
they must see the headline, they really need to know, not regarding to those
celebrities because it has nothing to do with the other people’s lives.
