TV Rating is very significant in ABS-CBN. In the Eliza Romualdez’s “Eugenio Gabriel Lopez III,” she accentuated about the being glutton of Lopez III in TV Ratings. The writing discussed about the history, life, fear of ABS-CBN Station, and its owner now, Gabriel Lopez III. It promulgated how the Lopez’s became rich and how they were takes back the TV Station after the Marcos regime seized their own. It talks about the richness of Lopez’s family, from owning the biggest TV station in the country to electric power, water and other big businesses in the country owned by them. The writing is all about dressing off Lopez III, from being voracious in terms of TV Ratings. He even wants “TV Patrol” move from an early time slot, because the show itself is being ranked down, obviously, just to beat the “Marimar,” who is the hot opponent of “TV Patrol” when it comes in ratings. He even wants “Mara Clara” to line up to “Marimar” because; Lopez III, together with his shareholders wants to regain its ratings. They are definitely glutton when it comes in TV Ratings, to the point that they will sacrifice the other program to satisfy their wants. It is not even a good idea to eradicate or move down the “TV Patrol” in its original time slot, because the viewers who are used to watch it will be confused. Maybe, the ABS-CBN should think of a good and better idea or strategy that somehow catch the attention of their viewers, and regain their ratings again. That’s not a good idea to surpass “Marimar.” There are many ways to make the “TV Patrol” better than before. It’s not either a good idea to intervene in news time, people used to watch it every night. Lopez III didn’t content of what he has, of what he owned, and now he has the latest telecommunication company. Why he should meddle in news time? If people want it, they will prefer to watch it. If “Mara Clara” was shown in 6:30 – 7:00 PM, probably the viewers will be confused of what will they watched because the two dramas are fine. The ABS-CBN really avaricious in ratings because they facsimile the GMA-7’s “Marimar.”
In Lopez III interview, he also mention
about “People don’t want news as much, more on entertainment.” This is not
factual because if they do their job well, they will gain viewers, no matter
what. It’s the Stations fault if their reports were repeatedly broadcasted –
all day and all night. If not, the news contains nothing, no human interest.
That’s why people’s tastes really change; it always varies in the part of the
both sides. And in the first place, news is very important in people’s life.
Its self-awareness, people always wants to be updated. But, for sure, TV
Patrol, only gave the “wants” of the people not the so-called “needs.” The
wants are those less important. Have you ever noticed that the TV Patrol never
reported Lopez as a bad boy before? It
didn’t broadcasted nor in radios. He never mention in the news that he raped a
girl, together with his friends, who are sons of eminent people. A very
proprietorial way of him seems to be very gastronome.
“When somebody cracks the code in a
particular genre all other will follow.” As Lopez III says, it is really true.
Have you ever scrutinize the “X-Factor Philippines?” it was later then copied
by GMA-7, “Protégé.” The GMA-7 airs the “Protégé” same as “X-Factor’s” time
slot. It’s kinda’ confusing in the part of the viewers, because the two shows
purveys singing skills of Pinoys, which are both competitions. The other TV
segment that was lately copied by GMA-7 was the “MMK” of Charo Santos, and was
mimicked by Mel Tianco’s “Magpakailanman.”
It’s quite disgusting in the both
station, because they even editorialize news just to comply their RATINGS!
The Battle Over Ratings.
Both station (ABS-CBN & GMA), really
surpassing with each other. They were outdoing each to cover news or an event.
Now, the viewers really confused of the two stations, and where to watch. In the
Marilyn Cortes issue, the fault of TV patrol is they put somebody through the
mill, and they even interrogate Cortes, as if she is the suspect, not a widow
and a Mom sympathizing over her sibling’s death. The TV Patrol really
sacrifices their attitude in reporting, and never did give consideration to the
family. And its number one Rival, GMA-7, also intervene in that issue; now the
both stations were given Cortes the third degree. What could’ve been the worse
than that? Nothing, it really sucks! The people’s annoyance between the rivals
really sucks in the viewers.
In the issue about the Marcos regime,
which is the ABS-CBN was then put up the shutters by Marcos. It is said that
the GMA was the country’s most popular network, in that time. And there is also
an anecdote that Imee Marcos, the presidential daughter, is one of the owners
of the said TV network. That is the advantage of GMA of being illustrious in
the Marcos’ martial law.
But after 14 years, the GMA resurrected
again from its sepulcher. And now, in the present, the biggest country’s TV
network and getting ride when it comes in grabbing ratings. It is said that the
ABS-CBN dominated, either news or entertainment, according to survey ratings. But
GMA isn’t about to defeat. The GMA executive says that people do change in TV
preferences. They say that less and less, people want entertainment rather than
news when they got home. They even says that people were looking for
self-relieving, not those hard news. This theory really helps them a lot to
gain ratings and surpass the TV Patrol. “The cause of this was the
over-supplying of news of TV Patrol,” says one of the executives of GMA-7.
But the ABS-CBN is defending their side
that it is an impractical excuse! ABS-CBN’s side says that they can’t really
surpass the TV Patrol, that’s why they are doing campaign. But it is pretty
obvious that ABS-CBN was defeated by GMA-7, even if other stations as well,
sometimes. The game of PBA – Ginebra actually illustrated how ABS-CBN derides
by PBA.
People used to watch news for the whole
day, that’s why the viewers preferred to watch another ambiance in their eyes
when they got home.
This simply says, TV Patrol should
change their traditional ways of reporting to beat the opponents. The only way
is to think of a new stratagem, and maybe sometimes they must accept the fact
that they are not the superior as always in the industry. The verity that they
are not always at the peak must be admitted by ABS-CBN. They should think that
they are not always at the top, sometimes being at the bottom makes you better,
to see the worst part and improve it as you crave for.
The Empire Strikes Back
It talks about reclaiming the TV
Station – ABS-CBN from Marcos, and the changing of tastes of viewers. From
shifting of preferences to defeating of “TV Patrol” by a Mexican produced soap
opera “Marimar.”
In the history is it said that it takes
time and efforts to reclaim the station to the Marcos’ regime.
Although Lopez’s owned lot of
infrastructures, still, they can’t afford to intervene in people’s preferences.
This simply says that the TV Patrol news was getting weak, weak in a way that,
a cheap drama could beat their undefeatable ratings.
“People were getting tired of hearing
hard news.” Exactly! That fact that people are flooded of news for the entire
day, they weren’t TV Patrol anymore because they already predict what would be
the reports will be shown.
If Cory Aquino didn’t fight for the
freedom from Martial Law, do you think Lopez’s family would be rich as they are
right now? Imagine that if in the present, Marcos’ family is still governing
the Philippines, have you ever thought that Lopez’s would be better than now?
Talk about “Tabloid Journalism,” it is
the first idea of TV Patrol and was copied by other existing channels/station.
It was shown how the anchor/s editorializes and comments in a specific issue
and this strategy sell and worked well in the viewers. It is a good idea to
allow their anchors to comment over the news just like what Korina Sanchez, Ted
Failon and Noli de Casteo doing after the end of “TV Patrol” in the present.
They leave some comments, personal, regarding to a political or social issue.
This idea help a lot to make the viewers watch because in giving some comments
makes the news flamboyant and vivid. As what Puno said, “There is nothing wrong
with spicing up the news and public affairs, it keep the viewers glued.” And
the good thing about in ABS-CBN, they are current in responding news.
But the major problem is the ABS-CBN
use the US Model – infotainment – the amalgamation of entertainment and
information. The consequence of GATT or the peace agreement was then eradicated
by Sharon Cuneta and Francis Pangilinan’s walk down the aisles. But this
doesn’t matter in their part because their primary apprehensions are their
stockholders and the MONEY as well.
But the Lopez’s
business-to-be-build-soon will really help the people, and it will help them
too from garnering viewers. The schemes that they will affix 5 more satellites
will probably profligacy in their part.
Merry Christmas Ma’am Glady’s Serafica!
Enjoy your vacation. ;)))))))
