A National President is the major
leader to be emulated by his members and people around him. In the President
Fidel Ramos regime, it such an ironic to the part of him, who is actually
rumoured, then proved that having a mistress. And this mistress is in point of
fact intervening in governmental issues and appointing some officials. The
Philippine Daily Inquirer sets off this issue and it takes them time to
investigate this so controversial issue. The technique of Philippine Daily
Inquirer in writing news about “the mistress” Rose Marie ‘Baby’ Arenas, is
fine, on the other side, is unscrupulous. Fine because they think first before
publishing the issue and dig some efforts and time to catapult the
controversial one. On the other hand, unethical because without the knowledge
of the “mistress” of the former president, she didn’t know about anything that
is happenings around her, the investigations to her closest friends and worst
enemies.
The deeds of Arenas in the political
arena can be a public interest. Just like the intervening of Arenas in some
businesses and the worst part, appointing friends and family members in
government offices.
The job of a journalist is to be the
watch-dog of the society, to seek facts. The PDI searched and dig some sources,
there’s unnamed and named. They must be publishing that issue because the media
(PDI) exerts so much effort and time, it’s kind of shame if they don’t.
Regarding to this issue, if the news
will be published or not, the answer is ‘why not?’ In the first place the
performance of Arenas is very catchy in the eyes of media because she is in the
political arena. And we cannot deny the fact that Arenas is a wealthy former
beauty queen and fashion model, so she is eminent and has something to the
public and media, to make things clear, she’s a public figure.
We cannot also deny the fact that the
privacy of Arenas was constantly invaded by the controversial dilemma. The
truth that the reporter waited outside the Arenas resident on the Wednesday to
check whether the weekly meetings involving high government officials indeed
held, there is something unethical way
because it is Arenas property and they didn’t have any permission to the
proprietor. Media practitioners should respect people’s civil rights. In the
part of PDI, there is a wrong move; they published some opinions from anonymous
personnel.
Accordance to the Philippine
Constitution Law, Article 3 Section7 states that we the people have the right
to information on matters of public concerns. And the people has the right to
know the behind the scenes.
The public needs factual information
that can make them vigilant of what occurring in the Malacanang Palace.
The investigations happened is
legitimate because the President itself didn’t know that Arena is intervening
in the national businesses. Without the knowledge of the former President, her former
mistress is making some moves that he has no concern.
The press and media must report this
abundant take action of Arenas. Including his ex-husband to become part of
MERALCO, it was then because of this Arenas intervention. Her best of friends
also was in the government positions. Who could have been worse than this
interventionist? Nothing, but the only one Rose Marie ‘Baby’ Arenas. The power
of Arenas is abusive; she abused her own power of being a mistress. And the former
President Cory Aquino, who was elected right after Ramos, was blamed Arenas
appointing! Arena is in fact a very influential being in that epoch!
Talk about the faults of the media and
newspaper industries. Remember this issue? “In June 1992, she was reportedly
agitated by a blind item in the defunct Daily Globe that referred to her as
“Imeldefic Part 2” allegedly because she got VIP Treatment at the Ninoy Aquino
International Airport. Months later, Arenas went on media binge, meeting with
journalists, granting interviews and having her photos published in newspapers
and magazines... more recently, Arenas made it to the front page.” Why should
bother to put her in the front page? Is that a hard news? Huh?
The reality, that I as a future
journalist must know the ways in reporting a very sensitive and very
confidential issue. In that certain issue, it envisages the fact that we, the
future journalist must be careful of every step in taking a news story. And we
must know the constitutions to defend our side too.
AUTHORS NOTE: I am not against to PDI,
in fact I’m an avid reader of them and really want to work there. :)
